2012 Theatre Season Launch Soiree

Find out what is coming up in 2012 at all of the Coast theatres with our inaugural Season Launch Soriee. All theatre lovers are encouraged to come along and enjoy this social evening, celebrating local theatre, rubbing shoulders with local thespians, and enjoy a complimentary drink on arrival, and delicious canapes throughout the evening.

Each theatre group will have approx 5 minutes to perform/present snippets of their 2012 productions to the Media and theatre lovers.

The evening will be hosted by Channel Seven's Rosanna Natoli.

Caloundra International ATP Challenger

All the International players love playing at Caloundra International Challenger 4-12 February 2012, because it is easily accessible with both Brisbane International and Sunshine Coast airports within an hours' drive, with tournament accommodation right on the beach and great weather.

Tennis Australia and Caloundra International officials decided for the very first time to host an ATP Challenger "Official Draw" on the beach. Bulcock Beach was a picture perfect location and was a special moment for wild card entry Thomas Muster (former world No.One) who said "he was happy to get an entry into his first ever Tennis Tournament on the Sunshine Coast despite being a resident for close to 10 years."

2012 Australia Day Dunny Races

The Plunge Ride at Aussie World is Now Open

Aussie World on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland has opened another new attraction and this one is the first of its type on the Sunshine Coast.

The new ride is a log flume ride called The Plunge with not one but two steep climbs and drop-offs. Riders climb aboard hollowed-out logs that are propelled by flowing water through a waterway before climbing upwards then plunging down a ramp at great speed.....twice!

Riders and spectators will be treated to a water splash created by the downhill momentum of The Plunge. An entertaining way to cool off on a hot Queensland day!

The Plunge is a thrilling ride and opened to the public on Thursday 8 December 2011 right in time for the December holiday period. The Plunge is the third new ride at Aussie World following the successful opening of thrill ride Redback and Giant Slide earlier this year.

Free Holiday Buses are Back

Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with TransLink, will be providing free travel on all public bus services across the coast from Monday 26 December 2011 to Sunday 8 January 2012.

The Free Holiday Buses program, funded by council’s Public Transport Levy, aims to reduce congestion and alleviate parking pressures at popular holiday spots during the festive season.

An initiative of council’s Sustainable Transport Strategy, Free Holiday Buses continue to grow in popularity with more than 200,000 passengers taking advantage of the service during the 15 day period last year.

National Youth Touch Football Championship 2011

The National Youth Championships is a unique sporting event on the Australian Sporting Calendar. Touch Football is one of the few sports that School Sport Australia and the National Sporting Organisation have been able to provide a combined event. The Sculptured Garden Exhibition 3 - 11 September 2011

This exhibition of sculpture for gardens and interiors has been held annually since 1997 in Buderim. Believed to be the largest of its type in Queensland, the exhibition showcases recent work by up to 40 Sunshine Coast Sculptors and Potters.

All of the work is original, hand formed and fired in the artists' studios. Over 150 pieces will be on display and available for sale. The work ranges in style from traditional to contemporary, cheeky to serene, comic to serious, so visitors are sure to see sculptural pieces which would enhance their homes and gardens.

Jazz by the Lake, will be held on the grassed foreshore of Lake Kawana Community Centre, Bokarina on Sunday 28 August from 1pm to 5pm.

Popular Brisbane jazz bands The Caxton Street Jazz Band and Greshka have been added to the local line-up. Local talent to tap your feet to includes renowned coast jazz duo, rhythm and blues soul-singer Michelle Brown and Johnny Maier on keyboards, effervescent musical brothers, Jazzerati and The Sunshine Coast Grammar School Big Band.

Pack a picnic, bring a chair and chill out for a Sunday afternoon treat. Jazz by the Lake is an all weather event - if it’s raining the event will move inside the centre.

Tour De Kawana 2011 Charity Cycle

Tour de Kawana Cystic Fibrosis Charity Cycle will be held on Sunday August 7, 2011. The Tour de Kawana is organised each year by a management committee of local volunteers. First started in 2005, this event was the initiative of a group of local business people who wanted to create a high profile community event, and raise much needed funds for CF having witnessed first hand the affects of this insidious degenerative disease.

Over it’s 6 year history this unique Event has raised over $300,000 in much needed funds, to support the more than 100 Cystic Fibrosis clients and their families, living in the Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay area. Showcasing the early morning beauty and tranquility of Lake Kawana, participants of all ages and abilities are invited to enter. Whether you’re a green thumb or want to do your bit for the environment come along on Sunday 31 July to plant a tree on National Tree Day. This year's Tree planting site will be in Bancroft’s Red Gum Bush Reserve (End of Lakeshore Place, Little Mountain Parklands, Little Mountain), an extension of the 2009 & 2010 National Tree Day Sites. The site size is 4000sm and will be planted out with mainly Wallum species to extend the existing bush reserve which is aimed to protect, maintain and restore the environmental and habitat values. This will be the main project site for the southern region so come and play your part with local Bushcare groups to help protect our environment for future generations

There will be tree planting and wildlife presentations on the day. National Tree Day is the perfect opportunity for you and your family to get outdoors, connect with nature and do something good for the environment. Please wear appropriate clothing—a hat, covered shores, long sleeved shirt and long pants are recommended. Gloves, tools and equipment for planting, watering cans and buckets, drinking water and a BBQ will be provided on the day.

Pomona King of the Mountain Festival and Race

The 32nd Pomona King of the Mountain Festival gets underway on Sunday 24th July 2011 at Stan Topper Park, Pomona, Sunshine Coast, Queensland. For the first time in the history of the race watch all the action live on the big screen in the park as athletes from around the globe line up to take on the most grueling and historic Mountain Race in the Country, in the Bendigo Bank Mountain Challenge, to become the next Mountain King.

This Free Family Festival gets underway from 7am. There are the heritage markets to stroll through, free kid's fun interactive activities, loads of family entertainment, skateboard demonstrations, amusements rides and a variety of running races and competitions for everyone to participate or maybe enjoy a Helicopter ride over the surrounding area or browse through the Antique and Collectibles Fair.

First up is the famous IGA Bush Poets Breakfast where well known local and national poets tell you a yarn as your enjoy an Aussie BBQ breakfast. School Relays and Cooroy Rag Family Fun Run get underway from 9am. The Zinc Mountain Dash is the new and exciting race to take part in this year. The day climaxes at 3.00pm when runners from around the world try to conquer the most historic and gruelling 4.5km mountain race in the country in the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge. Mary Valley Art Festival

The festival opens on Thursday 7 July with a wine and cheese gala event from 6.00 p.m., followed by viewing until Sunday 10 July. The People's Choice Awards are held on Sunday from 2.00 p.m. The Mary Valley Art Festival uses the theme 'helping hands' to celebrate the unbridled friendship, strength and demonstration of community spirit displayed in the face of mass devastation during recent natural disasters.

15th Musto Etchells Australasian Winter Championship 2011

Newport Mooloolaba Sponsored the 15th MUSTO Etchells Australasian Winter Championship 2011. This key event in Mooloolaba’s event calendar was held on the 9 to 12 June 2011 Queens birthday weekend. The event attracts a highly competitive fleet of 52 boats sailing on Mooloolaba Bay. With light conditions on the 1st day proving changeling, racing on days 2 and 3 improved. The winners were T. King, D. Edwards, O. McMahon & I. Wheen, all from Sydney. This continued the tradition of not having the same team winning twice, 15 years and 15 different winners.

The Mooloolaba Etchells winter event continues to provide competitors with a brilliant location for racing with one of the easily most accessible blue-water racing venues on the coast of Australia. Newport Mooloolaba’s Accommodation Bowls Bonanza day was held on 15th June. The full day of bowling attracted a full field of 168 bowlers for the Open pairs. The total prize pool of $1300 was keenly contested, 5 bonus prizes of accommodation were offered on the day by Bernie & Vicki Sullivan the managers of Newport Mooloolaba. These were awarded to teams who had a bad day at the office and 2 were drawn in the daily raffle.

The weather Gods looked looked favourably on Mooloolaba with sunny skies and a maximum of 22 degrees.

The Mooloolaba Accommodation Bowls Bonanza continues until Saturday 18 June, followed by the next weekend 24/25/26 June 2011 with prize money of $18,000. This is part of the 2011 Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival which carries total prize money of $120000 and concludes on the 4th August 2011.

A sneak preview of David Williamson and Mohamed Khadra’s latest play and a number of Australian and Queensland exclusive performances are on offer at this year’s Noosa Longweekend Festival (June 17-26, 2011). Each year, hundreds of thousands of volunteers take to their streets with white and yellow bags and don their gloves to clean up their local community. Parks, beaches, bushland, waterways, streets and schools – Clean Up Australia Day is a simple way you can take action to clean up, fix up and conserve our prized Australian environment.

In 2010, more than 588,000 registered volunteers across Australia pitched in at 7,073 Clean Up Sites. This year, as part of the 21st anniversary, Clean Up is calling for the support of every Australian to do their bit by joining others for the annual Day.

Christmas on the Sunshine Coast: A free bus in everyone's stocking

No need to fill up at the petrol pump this Christmas. From 26 December to 9 January all buses on the Sunshine Coast will be free in a move by Sunshine Coast Council to bust congestion, free up parking and encourage sustainable travel.

For the first time, the free service will apply to every single public bus route on the Sunshine Coast. Last year almost 85,000 jumped aboard the free buses and council is hoping for big numbers again this year. So from December, head to council’s website for timetables and dates.

Over 20 Mooloolaba holiday apartment complexes have pledged their support to the Sunshine Coast energy conservation community as they work with ENERGEX to enrol their apartments to the program.

With summer rapidly approaching, ENERGEX is making every effort to encourage holiday complex apartment owners to join the program before temperatures soar and peak demand on the Sunshine Coast’s electricity network increases.

President of the Mooloolaba Business and Tourism Unit Managers Bernie Sullivan from Newport Apartments said he was 100 percent in support of the program and encouraged his fellow managers and owners to join him.

“Just about every holiday apartment in Mooloolaba is now equipped with at least one air-conditioner and television if not more,” Mr Sullivan said.

“By joining the program each apartment can have a load control device fitted to the air-conditioner, and a free stand-by power saving device set-up on the television, at no cost to the complex or owner,” he said.

“It’s a fantastic program that will make a big difference to sustainability on the Sunshine Coast, but won’t make any difference to tourist’s comfort,” he said.

Island Charity Swim – Mudjimba Beach out around Old Woman Island down to Mooloolaba. 11km+ of swimming on the wrong side of the shark nets! Celebrate 10 years of fund raising for the Sunshine Coast Special Schools in 2010.

More than 100 swimmers are set to get wet as part of the annual Island Charity Swim from Mudjimba to Mooloolaba on August 14. An armada of support paddlers and vessels will accompany the swimmers on a course from the beach at Mudjimba, around Old Woman Island 1.5 kilometres off the beach and across to Mooloolaba.

The event, which raises funds for Currimundi and Nambour special schools, has developed a family of supporters with many swimmers returning year after year to contribute.

THE 48th Sunshine Coast Winter Lawn Bowls Carnival comprises of six carnivals and one of them is Mooloolaba Accommodation Bowls Bonanza. Carnival is a series of one and two day bowling tournaments for male, female and mixed gender.

Players from across the Sunshine Coast and Queensland as well as from New Zealand
and interstate have indicated attendance and appears this year that player numbers are booming.

Tour De Cure coming to Mooloolaba

The Tour de Cure raises funds that are distributed across cancer research, support and prevention in men, women and children, with the aim of reaching the broadest possible outcomes in the fight against cancer. Since its conception in 2007, the Tour has raised more than $1.7M and has a vision to become the leading cycling tour foundation in Australia.

For the 2010 Tour, 75 riders will cover 1,400 kms in 9 days as they ride from Sydney to Mooloolaba on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Sunshine Coast Energy Conservation Community

Residents and businesses in Mooloolaba, Sippy Downs and Mountain Creek on Sunshine Coast are set to become members of Queensland’s first ‘Energy Conservation Community'.

Energy Conservation Communities is initiative designed to reduce peak demand for electricity on the Sunshine Coast. A similar scheme targeting the tourism industry would also be rolled out on the Coast and Newport Mooloolaba has signed up to be a part of it.

Residents who sign up before the end of July 2010 will get extra incentives including a free hot water efficiency check, air-conditioner clean and check, a standby power board, and a $50 voucher for the Queensland Government’s ClimateSmart Home Service. ENERGEX will also make a $50 donation on their behalf to a local community benefit fund to help local schools and community groups conserve energy.

Mooloolaba Triathlone 2010 Results

Brad Kahlefeldt won the first World Cup title of the 2010 season in Mooloolaba. Kahlefeldt finished just ten seconds ahead of Great Britain's Stuart Hayes and Aussie youngster James Seear finished in third.

Vendula Frintova won an ITU World Cup event after crossing the line in 2 hours 3.16 minutes. The 26-year-old produced a stellar run leg after coming from 1 minute 37 seconds behind midway through the cycle to finish ahead of Japan's Tomoko Sakimoto and Great Britain's Liz Blatchford.

THE Mooloolaba Triathlon Festival was bigger than ever before. More than 650 entrants for Friday night's twilight run, 600 youngsters for Saturday's Superkidz Triathlon and 5500 for the Mooloolaba Triathlon on Sunday.

Picture perfect weather helped make this year's triathlon festival a crowd-puller, with 25,000 people lined along the route from Mooloolaba down to Maroochydore's Sixth Avenue.

Outrigger Canoe National Marathon Titles

Mooloolaba Outrigger Canoe Club is host to the Outrigger Canoe National Marathon Titles, an annual event bringing together the best outrigger paddlers in the country.
